WORLD LANGUAGE

The East Hartford High School World Language Department is committed to increasing proficiency in a second language by providing engaging, challenging, and real-world language instruction in Spanish and Chinese.  All courses are designed to develop learners’ communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing as well as increase intercultural competencies in order to engage in our local and global environments. These skills and competencies increase College and Career Readiness, and they prepare students to interact with people in our community and around the world.

Highlights of the EHHS World Language Program include a proficiency-based curriculum, student-centered learning, performance-based assessments, an integrated approach to culture, and a state-of-the-art language lab.  Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication and to utilize higher order thinking skills around thematic units of study.

Courses are offered in Spanish from beginning level I to Advanced Placement with the option for Honors in Spanish 2, 3 and 4.  In Chinese, classes are offered at levels 1-4.

Students in the Class of 2020 will be the first class eligible to receive the Seal of Biliteracy if they have demonstrated biliteracy in English and another language. The Seal of Biliteracy not only prepares students for our increasingly diverse world, but it also provides universities with a method to recognize & give credit to applicants for attainment of high-level skills in more than one language.
